3.14 Detroit Vipers - QB Landry Jones

In the real world: Four seasons ago, Jones, then a redshirt freshman, was pressed into duty when starter Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury. He more than held his own, winning seven out of the ten games he started that year. Two years after that, Jones was on his way to being one of the top QBs in all of college football, when his top wide receiver, Ryan Broyles, tore his knee. In three games without Broyles, he threw zero touchdowns and five interceptions, at which point returning for his senior season became an easy choice to make. He improved in two key metrics as a senior (TD:INT ratio, completion percentage), but even then, as ESPN's Sharon Katz pointed out, he struggled when forced out of the pocket. Since the start of the 2010 season, Jones completed 27.4 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and five interceptions when forced to scramble out of the pocket. The Pittsburgh Steelers took him in Round 4; Jones figures to carry the clipboard as a third-stringer for at least a couple years behind veteran Ben Roethlisberger and backup Bruce Gradkowski.
In the TUFF world: I just had to take him; however remote the chance is that he replaces Roethlisberger long-term, and however likely that Jones is just a developmental prospect at this point, there is also a chance that a great career like Big Ben's could get cut short, and in that instance, the Steelers would want to take a long look at the 6'4" Jones. Maybe working under Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh's coaches, he can overcome whatever issues led to his poor performance under duress. With that said, I'm glad I didn't reach on him earlier in Round 3.
